On December 1st, AUNI Nutrition Educator Sophia Canady had the opportunity to volunteer with Universal Audenried Charter High School’s culinary scholars at the Evening of Style and Grace Fashion Show and Fundraiser presented by Faatimah and Kenneth Gamble at the University of the Arts. The Winter Wonderland theme was lovely and the students did a terrific job cooking and catering for the event.

We try not to argue too much with Mother Nature. So we didn’t let a little rain stop us this morning — or at last month’s Harvest Fest at Mill Creek Urban Farm. Take a peek at the slideshow! (Photos by Sophia Canady)

One of our cooking crews, NMW (Nutrition’s Most Wanted), conducted their first outreach of the season today, which meant teaching young students at Andrew Hamilton Elementary School a lesson plan NMW crew members created about healthy nutrition habits.
AUNI Youth Intern Kiearra did a fantastic job of explaining the importance of vitamins. To help the kids better understand the concept, she drew a diagram of the human body to demonstrate how vitamins affect the body. After the lesson, the NMW crew members lead the elementary students in a fun game of “watermelon,” which made everyone laugh.
Once everyone calmed down, it was time to eat the pasta and vegetable medley dish that other AUNI Youth Interns prepared. I loved seeing all of the children try the food, and once they tried it they asked for more.
Honest Tom’s Taco Shop is having a second annual HOT TACO MASSACRE. They will be serving a special menu of ridiculously hot tacos, “that no sane person could ever possibly enjoy.” The event will be on Sunday, November 2nd beginning at 6pm. All proceeds benefit our Community Farm and Food Resource Center at Bartram’s Garden. See you there. More info available on Honest Tom’s Facebook page.
Thank you for making AUNI’s 3rd Annual Harvest Festival a success!
If you were one of the hundreds of neighbors who joined us for our Harvest Festival, thank you! Whether you took a farm tour, enjoyed fresh pressed cider with our youth interns, or a quesadilla from chef Gee, we were happy to spend a beautiful fall day with you. Check out our Facebook Album “Harvest Fest 2014” for event photos.
Special thanks to our partners and special guests, Bartram’s Garden, PHS, Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation, National Parks Service Canoe Mobile, Philadelphia Orchard Project, Camp Sojourner, Jean-Jacques Gabriel, Michael Bomze and our MC Mighty Flipside.
