Trips
Vermont
This summer, UNI took a field trip with high school students from the
summer Youthworks program to visit organic agriculture projects in
Vermont. In traveling with the students we hoped to strengthen our
knowledge and connections to food systems and to recognize how our urban
environment defines our food culture here in Philly. The trip was a
rousing success and UNI hopes to make it an annual experience for our
summer interns.
Highlights include:
- Camping out in the woods.
- Vermiculture (worm composting).
- Visiting Burlington College.
- Swimming in Lake Champlain.
- Canoeing.
- Milking cows.
- Pet snake.
Hawk Mountain
In October, UNI went to the birds. UNI staff and students went on a
daytrip to Hawk Mountain Reserve on Blue Mountain in PA. Students
learned about and interacted with the sylvan flora and fauna of the
Keystone State while hiking up the mountain and watching for the
migrating hawks.
Boston
Three students accompanied UNI staff to the Community Food Security
Coalition Conference in Boston in November 2003. The conference brought
together urban gardening groups from around the country. Students toured
the Food Project's sites in Boston, went apple picking, and had fun
exploring the city. This was the first time UNI brought students to a
conference, but the students had such a fun time that UNI plans to bring
students to more conferences.
Caving
And in November, UNI took it underground. UNI staff and students took
their first of many caving trips to explore the formations at a
limestone cave near Shippensburg, PA.
